Research on the effectiveness of hypnosis and hypnotherapy

PhD Alfred A. Barrios, reviewed the overall lasting success of various approaches to change including hypnotherapy. It revealed the following recovery rates:

Hypnotherapy 93% recovery after 6 sessions

Behaviour Therapy 72% recovery after 22 sessions

Psychoanalysis 38% recovery after 600 sessions
- Published in Psychotherapy Magazine (Volume 7, Number 1, Alfred A Barrios, PhD)

Migraine and Headaches
Hypnosis is highly effective in the treatment of chronic migraine headaches. All Hypnotic methods appear to be superior to standard treatment relying on pharmacological approaches alone. Patients treated for migraines and headaches with Hypnosis had a significant reduction in severity and the number of attacks compared to a control group treated with traditional medications. At the one year follow-up the number of patients in the Hypnosis group who had no headaches for over three months was significantly higher. - International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 23, 48-58

Phobias
Student test anxiety hypnosis:
Students who had been taught self hypnosis showed a significant reduction in anxiety scores (maintained at 6-month follow-up) compared to a control group who didn't receive hypnosis. (1)
Public speaking:
The group who received hypnosis had a greater expectation for change and that change was achieved, than those who had non hypnotic treatment.
Fear of flying:
50% of patients afraid of flying were improved or cured after Hypnosis treatment.

Stop Smoking

"Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little." - New Scientist Vol. 136 issue 1845

In a recent hypnosis stop smoking study, where smokers attended individual hypnotherapy for stop smoking over three sessions, 81% had stopped smoking after the hypnosis treatment ended, and at a 12 month follow-up nearly 50% of the hypnosis group remained smoke free. And 95% of the people were satisfied with their stop smoking hypnosis treatment. -  International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis 2004 Jan; 52 (1):73-81

Weight loss
"In a 9-week study of two weight management groups (one using weight loss hypnosis, the other one not using hypnosis), the weight loss hypnosis group continued to get results in the following two years, while the non hypnosis group showed no further results" - Journal of Clinical Psychology

*In a weight loss hypnotherapy study of 60 women losing weight with hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds, while the non hypnosis weight loss group lost an average of only 0.5 pounds" - Journal of Clinical Psychology

The history of the effectiveness of Hypnotherapy

In 1892 the process of hypnosis and especially hypnotherapy proved to be so effective that the British Medical Association (BMA) after the completion of extensive research on hypnotism (funny enough in the hope of disproving it), officially acknowledged the "genuineness of the hypnotic state" and approved hypnosis as a form of orthodox practice, as opposed to complementary or alternative medicine. - (British Medical Journal, 1892)

In 1955, further thorough and extensive research by the BMA led the committee to conclude and officially proclaim that ‘beneficial psychological and physiological changes could be proved by hypnotism and hypnosis’.

In 1958, the American Medical Association (AMA) commissioned a similar report on hypnosis and hypnotherapy which endorsed the BMA (1955) report.

In 1955 the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US, upon completing their extensive research into hypnotherapy and hypnosis, compiled an official statement supporting the effectiveness of hypnosis in alleviating chronic pain conditions. - (NIH, 1955)
